The houses here

Why a standard one will not fit.

Keswick and the country around Bassenthwaite and Threlkeld is Lakeland stone and slate, older cottages, big Victorian houses and a large number of properties that are let out for part of the year. A holiday let is a different brief from a family house: it has to look right in photographs, and it has to survive changeover after changeover without marking.

We have worked on both kinds up here. A barn conversion at Bassenthwaite, under the roof trusses, and a fitted library and media wall at Threlkeld facing the fells through a picture window. Both are rooms where the view is the point and the furniture has to know that.

We make the carcasses, so the wardrobes finish at the ceiling instead of stopping short of it, the run finishes at the wall instead of stopping short of that, and the sloping ceiling in the back bedroom stops being a reason you cannot have storage there.

Keswick: the questions we get

Do you fit kitchens in holiday lets around Keswick?

Yes. A let needs a harder-wearing specification than a family kitchen in some respects and a more photogenic one in others, and both are easier to hit when the furniture is made to order rather than chosen from a range.

Can you make furniture that works around a view?

That is usually the whole job up here. At Threlkeld we built a full library and media wall facing a window onto the fells, which meant keeping the height of the joinery under the line of the glass and putting the storage where it would not fight the view.

Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?

Yes, and it is one of the better arguments for having them made. A slope defeats standard units completely, but it is only an angle on a drawing, and the space under it is usually the only spare storage in the room.

Do the wardrobes go right to the ceiling?

If you want them to. Because we cut the carcasses, the height is set by your ceiling rather than by what a supplier stocks, which usually gains a full shelf across the whole wall.
