Home offices and studies

Desk, shelves and cupboards built into the room as one piece of furniture. Working from home stopped being temporary some years ago, and a desk from a furniture shop in the corner of a bedroom has never been a good answer.

A fitted home study in deep blue-green in-frame cabinets: a desk with an oak worktop built in under a sash window, banks of drawers with brass cup handles, and glazed bookcases either side

The argument

Built into the room, not placed in it

The useful thing about a fitted study is that the desk, the shelves and the storage are one object, so there are no gaps to collect dust, no wobble, and no wasted strip of floor between the desk and the wall.

It also means the desk can be exactly where the light is. A window in the wrong place for a bought desk is not in the wrong place for a made one.

At Threlkeld we built a full library and media wall facing a window onto the fells, in deep green, with glazed cabinets either side. It is a study, a library and a sitting room wall in one run of joinery.

Fitted library and media wall at Threlkeld in deep green, glazed cabinets either side of the television, facing a window onto the fells

A study built as one piece of furniture gives you a desk at the right height for the window you actually have, shelving that fits the books you actually own, and cupboards that hide the printer and the cables.

Named and dated

Real houses, with the month on them.

Where we work

Cumbria, and over the border.

We fit our own furniture across north Cumbria and into Dumfriesshire. Two of the jobs on this site are in Scotland, in the same house, two years apart.

Home offices and studies: what people ask

Can you build a study into an alcove?

An alcove is the best place for one. Desk across the alcove at the depth the alcove gives you, shelves above, cupboards below, and the whole thing finishing flush with the chimney breast rather than standing proud of it.

Can the same run of furniture be a study and a television wall?

Yes, and it often should be, because most rooms are asked to do both. The Threlkeld job is exactly that: library, media wall and storage in one piece of joinery.

The rest of the house

We make all of it.
