Dressing rooms

A spare bedroom turned into the room you get ready in. A dressing room is usually a spare bedroom that nobody sleeps in. Turning it into the room you get ready in is one of the biggest changes you can make to a house for the money, and almost nobody sells it because it cannot be bought in a box.

Fitted dressing room at Dornock with mirrored wardrobe fronts down both walls and a free-standing island of drawers
Dressing room, Dornock, Dumfriesshire. Fitted July 2025.

The argument

A wall of wardrobes is not a dressing room

The difference is the middle of the room. A dressing room has an island or a bench, so there is somewhere to put things down, somewhere to sit, and drawers at waist height instead of on the floor.

It also has the interiors solved: hanging at two heights where you need it, full height where you have long coats, shallow drawers for the things that should not be folded, and lighting inside rather than a bulb in the middle of the ceiling.

None of that is available as a product. All of it is available as a drawing.

From our own jobs

Rooms we have already made.

Fitted dressing room at Dornock with mirrored wardrobe fronts down both walls and a free-standing island of drawers
Fitted bedroom in cream, with mirrored wardrobe doors, a dressing area and lit display cabinets

We made one at Dornock in July 2025: mirrored fronts down both walls and a free-standing island of drawers in the middle of the room.

Named and dated

Real houses, with the month on them.

Where we work

Cumbria, and over the border.

We fit our own furniture across north Cumbria and into Dumfriesshire. Two of the jobs on this site are in Scotland, in the same house, two years apart.

Dressing rooms: what people ask

How big does a room need to be for a dressing room?

Smaller than people expect. A single bedroom will usually take wardrobes down both sides and a narrow bench or a shallow island down the middle. Below that it becomes a wardrobe wall, which is still worth doing.

Should the fronts be mirrored?

Often yes, because a dressing room is usually an inner room with one window, and mirrored fronts put the light back into it. At Dornock we ran mirror down both walls for exactly that reason.

The rest of the house

We make all of it.
