Where Bob Postlethwaite started in 1972, and we still make it. Bob Postlethwaite started this firm in 1972 making pine tables, chairs and Welsh dressers in a small workshop at Lingey Close. We still make free-standing pieces, and it is still the same site.

The argument

Where the firm started

Tables, dressers, sideboards, drinks cabinets and single pieces made for a particular spot in a particular room. The same timber, the same machines and the same paint shop as everything else we make.

It is also the honest answer when fitted furniture is not appropriate. In a building where you should not be fixing into the walls, a free-standing dresser built to the alcove does the same job and can be lifted out again.

A free-standing piece is the right answer when the room should not be built into: a rented house, a listed building, or a piece you want to take with you.

Where we work

Cumbria, and over the border.

We fit our own furniture across north Cumbria and into Dumfriesshire. Two of the jobs on this site are in Scotland, in the same house, two years apart.

Free-standing furniture: what people ask

Do you still make tables and dressers?

Yes. It is what the firm was founded on in 1972 and the machinery to do it is still in the shop, alongside the newer machines.

Can you make one piece rather than a whole room?

Yes. Ring and describe it. Single pieces are a smaller job than a kitchen and we are honest about the fact that they carry a smaller share of the setup, so it is worth a conversation about what makes sense.
