Bespoke kitchens

Made in our own workshop at Dalston, and fitted by our own men. A kitchen is the biggest piece of furniture anybody buys, it is in the room the household actually lives in, and it has to survive twenty years of a family using it. That is a manufacturing problem, not a shopping problem.

The argument

What made to measure actually buys you

A standard kitchen is built out of carcasses in fixed widths. When the room is not a multiple of those widths, the difference is made up with filler panels, and every filler panel is worktop you paid for and cannot use.

Ours are cut to the room. If the run is 3,240mm, the furniture is 3,240mm. If the wall leans, the scribe is cut to the lean. If the chimney breast is in the way, the larder is drawn around it rather than stopped short of it.

It also means the kitchen is not limited to what a catalogue happens to offer. A larder the height of the room, a drawer deep enough for the pans you own, an island with the breakfast table built into the end of it: all of those are drawings rather than product codes.

We buy the timber, cut and machine the carcasses at Dalston, prime them in our own paint shop, hand-paint them on site in water-based eggshell, and fit them with our own fitting team. One firm, one drawing, one number to ring afterwards.

We fit our own furniture across north Cumbria and into Dumfriesshire. Two of the jobs on this site are in Scotland, in the same house, two years apart.

Bespoke kitchens: what people ask

What is an in-frame kitchen, and why does it cost more?

In-frame means every door and drawer sits inside a face frame fixed to the carcass, the way a piece of furniture is made, rather than hanging on the front of a box. It takes more timber, more machining and far more accuracy, because the gap around each door has to be even the whole way round and it is visible.

It is also why a well-made in-frame kitchen still looks right in twenty years. There is a frame holding everything square.

Can you match a colour I have already chosen?

Yes. Painted work is primed here and hand-painted on site in water-based eggshell, and the colour is whatever you want it to be. That is one of the practical advantages of having a paint shop rather than ordering doors in a manufacturer's fixed range.

Do you do the worktops and appliances too?

We have sinks, taps, appliances and worktops on display in the showroom and they are quoted alongside the furniture, so you are looking at one price for the room rather than assembling it from three suppliers.

What if I only want doors, not a whole kitchen?

Ring and ask. We are set up for whole rooms and that is where we do our best work, but we make everything here, so a conversation costs nothing.
