The houses here

Why a standard one will not fit.

Wigton is the market town between us and the Solway, and its housing is mostly Georgian and Victorian around the centre with farms and smallholdings spread out across the plain behind it. Farmhouse kitchens out this way tend to be large, cold, awkwardly shaped rooms with a range at one end and a door to the yard at the other, and they need furniture that accepts the shape of the room rather than arguing with it.

Boot rooms matter more here than almost anywhere else we work. A farmhouse back door takes mud, dogs, waterproofs and boots every day of the winter, and a proper boot room with a bench, a drying space and real storage changes how the whole house works. It is one of the jobs we are asked for most and one of the easiest to justify.

We buy the timber, cut and machine the carcasses at Dalston, prime them in our own paint shop, hand-paint them on site in water-based eggshell, and fit them with our own fitting team. One firm, one drawing, one number to ring afterwards.

Wigton: the questions we get

Do you fit kitchens in farmhouses around Wigton?

Regularly. Farmhouse kitchens are usually big rooms with an old range, a stone floor and walls that are not straight, and they are among the most satisfying rooms to make furniture for because nothing off a shelf fits them.

Can you build a boot room off the back door?

Yes, and on a working farm it is often the room that earns its money fastest. Bench, boot storage underneath, hooks and a drying space above, all in materials that will take being wet every day through the winter.

What is an in-frame kitchen, and why does it cost more?

In-frame means every door and drawer sits inside a face frame fixed to the carcass, the way a piece of furniture is made, rather than hanging on the front of a box. It takes more timber, more machining and far more accuracy, because the gap around each door has to be even the whole way round and it is visible.

It is also why a well-made in-frame kitchen still looks right in twenty years. There is a frame holding everything square.

Can you match a colour I have already chosen?

Yes. Painted work is primed here and hand-painted on site in water-based eggshell, and the colour is whatever you want it to be. That is one of the practical advantages of having a paint shop rather than ordering doors in a manufacturer's fixed range.
