Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire
Fitted bedrooms and wardrobes in Lockerbie

The houses here
Why a standard one will not fit.
Lockerbie is a Dumfriesshire market town on the main line north, with a sandstone centre and a wide farming hinterland behind it running up into the Moffat hills. The properties we are asked about there are mostly farmhouses and older stone houses, with the occasional steading conversion.
Steading conversions have the same problem as the Cumbrian barns: a beautiful big room with no square corner in it. The advantage of making the furniture is simply that a wall being out by forty millimetres over three metres stops being a problem and becomes a dimension on a drawing.
We make the carcasses, so the wardrobes finish at the ceiling instead of stopping short of it, the run finishes at the wall instead of stopping short of that, and the sloping ceiling in the back bedroom stops being a reason you cannot have storage there.

Lockerbie: the questions we get
Do you work as far north as Lockerbie?
Yes. It is towards the outer edge of the area we cover in Dumfriesshire, and work up there is generally planned as a single programme rather than split across several visits.
What happens when a steading wall is not straight?
It gets measured, and the measurement goes on the drawing. A wall out by forty millimetres over three metres will defeat a run of standard carcasses and will not trouble furniture that was cut to that wall in the first place.
Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?
Yes, and it is one of the better arguments for having them made. A slope defeats standard units completely, but it is only an angle on a drawing, and the space under it is usually the only spare storage in the room.
Do the wardrobes go right to the ceiling?
If you want them to. Because we cut the carcasses, the height is set by your ceiling rather than by what a supplier stocks, which usually gains a full shelf across the whole wall.
